PETRILAK, CARPENTER AND SITES GRAB HOT SUMMER NIGHT WINS
AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY
The headliner of the Hot Summer Night Special at the Penn Can Speedway on Tuesday night was the Race of Champions Sportsman Tour.† Nick Petrilak of Greenfield, PA vaulted to the race lead on lap nine of the 35 lap event.† Petrilak held off an outside charge by the Crate powered ride of Ryan Olsommer then Eddie White on a late restart to take the win.† At the finish it was Petrilak, Eddie White, Olsommer, Butch Green and Anthony Perrego.† Jon Carpenter continued his hot streak as he went to the lead of the RoC Street Stock event on lap seven and maintained a safe lead throughout for his fourth win at Penn Can this year.† In a tight race ending battle in the IMCA Style Modifieds Brad Sites bested Matt Roberts in the IMCA Mods return to Penn Can.
Ryan Olsommer and Eddie White led the pack of Open Sportsman to the green flag with Olsommer taking the initial lead.† Olsommer led White, Nick Petrilak, Randy Green and Ken Titus in the early going.† The wide racing surface allowed the drivers to race four wide at one point with no contact.† Petrilak moved in on White for second and took the spot on lap four.†† With five laps complete it was Olsommer, Petrilak, White, Titus and Butch Green.† Just a couple laps later the No.72 of Petrilak was looking for the race lead as the top two raced nose to tail.† Olsommer and Petrilak raced side by side for three laps before Petrilak pulled ahead from the bottom of turn four on lap nine.† A dozen laps were complete with Petrilak leading Olsommer, E.White, Brian White and Green. †Olsommer was closing back in on Petrilak as the halfway mark approached meanwhile Anthony Perrego was up to the fifth spot from the 14th starting spot.† At the crossed flags it was Petrilak holding a narrow lead over Olsommer, E.White, Green and Perrego. †White challenged for second but Olsommer had his Crate powered mount working well on the outside.† Olsommer closed after a few green flag laps on Petrilak and had a big run on lap 24 to pull even briefly but the caution flew before Olsommer had another chance to pass Petrilak.† On the restart Eddie White moved ahead of Olsommer leaving Olsommer and Green to battle for the final podium spot.† Petrilak in the Sleepy Hollow Golf ride switched to the high side in the final laps and held off Eddie White for the win.† Olsommer settled for third with Butch Green a close fourth and Accord regular Perrego completing the top five.† The rest of the top ten were Alan Barker, Charlie Hendrickson, Nick Nye, Brad Szulewski and Tom Collins.
ďI needed to get back in the rhythm of Penn Can there I didnít think I had a great race going.Ē said Petrilak ďOlsommer showed me the top and I went up there and the tires felt like they had claws in them and it was just digging on the top.† We didnít even plan on coming but we got the car ready this afternoon and Iím glad we did.Ē
A strong field of RoC Street Stocks were led at the start by Cory Costa and Josh Butler.† Costa, Rich Green and Jon Carpenter dueled in tight formation for the race lead for the first half dozen laps.† Carpenter nosed ahead of Green on lap four then started to work to the inside of Costa.† Carpenter took the lead on lap seven as Costa, Green, Steve Deinhardt and Butler chased.† The race was for second now as it was three wide on a restart with Deinhardt using the way outside to impressively snatch second.† Green and Butler passed Costa who later got spun by Shane Wolf Sr. ending his strong run.† Deinhardt tried to reel in Carpenter but Carpenter was too strong on this night as he crossed the line first ahead of Deinhardt, Green, Butler and Shane Wolf Jr.
The IMCA Style Modifieds made a return to the tricky 3/8 mile on Tuesday and it turned out to be the closest finish of the night.† Dan Burman led at the start over Matt Roberts while Brad Sites was
passing cars in the opening laps.† Roberts was looking to the outside of Burman on lap five while Sites was there to make it a three car battle.† Sites worked the inside to take the lead on lap seven with Matt and Gary Roberts just behind.† Matt Roberts powered back to the lead in his preferred high line just a couple laps later.† Gary Roberts was after Sites but Roberts got forced on the infield berm and spun.† Sites once again used the low side to pull even with Matt Roberts and after a four lap duel Sites closed the door on the outside running Roberts on the completion of lap 16 to take the lead.† On the final lap Matt Roberts got a run on Sites but Sites was too strong down low as he took the exciting win over Matt Roberts, Mike Wilmot, Jake Maynard and KC Cole.
The Four Cylinders saw a first time winner at the Can as Lee Zook bested Penn Can kingpin Kenny Underwood and Five Mile runner Tucker Harpell.
